Vision Statement
The total school environment provides an opportunity for learning.  Visitors to the Reedy Creek campus are welcomed by a professional and friendly office staff. Administrators communicate openly and are visible and suportive. The competent staff addresses the curriculum goals as outlined in the Standard Course of Study.  Our teachers are empowered by the administration to take risks which then leads to innovative teaching practices in the classroom.  Upon entering any classroom, you will find students actively engaged while their teachers serve as facilitators.  Strategies include cooperative learning, technology-based learning, and inquiry lesson approaches utilizing hands-on learning across the curriculum.  A variety of literacy strategies are also incorporated to meet the needs of individual learners.  Reedy Creek is better able to target individual neds through its use of flexible staff resources.  Regular, consistent, collaborative planning is on-going.  Authentic assessment occurs in a variety of ways.  The climate embraced fosters the development of the whole child, which includes a safe and nuturing environment and an active partnership between community, students, and staff.  We all take pride in and celebrate student and staff successes.  Our philosophy is exemplified by:
  • displays of student work
  • excited and motivated on-task students
  • collegial interactions among staff and community
  • a positive staff and
  • student diversity

All of these  components work together in supporting a common vision for our students.  We intend to achieve this through unwavering commmitment to integrity, service, and quality.

Absences

Student attendance is essential for continuous academic growth. If your child is unable to attend school due to sickness or a family related emergency, we ask that you call the office at 380-3660 to report to your child's teacher as well as sending in a written note the day your child returns to school. Teachers are asked to keep all written notes in the rare case that attendance becomes a factor in a child's promotion to the next grade. Children miss valuable information when they are absent and it is difficult to give make-up work, as so much of instruction is done with hands-on applications and explanations. Again, we thank you for making sure your child is in school.

Children who become ill during the school day will remain in the health room until a parent is able to pick them up from school. No child who is running a fever will be allowed to remain at school.

Academic Progress
Reedy Creek's reporting process is as follows:
  • REGULAR REPORT CARDS ARE SENT HOME EVERY 9 WEEKS for GRADES 2-5.
  • Students in Kindergarten and First Grade receive report cards at the end of quarters 2-4.
  • Interim reports are sent home mid-quarter.
  • STUDENT LED CONFERENCES will be held three times a year.
  • PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES will be held at least twice a year for all students.
  • At conferences, ask to see your child's writing portfolio, language arts matrix, and math matrix.

Behavior Expectations

All students at Reedy Creek Elementary are expected to show respect for themselves and others at all times. A school wide Behavior Expectation Plan will be followed for the 2004-2005 school year to focus on positive choices and make children accountable for their actions during their daily routine. Good choices include:

Classroom Behavior - following directions, raising their hand before speaking, remaining seated during teacher instruction
Playground - exhibiting good sportsmanship
Repsect - showing respect to adults and peers
Cafeteria - remaining seated to eat and talking in a quiet voice
Hallway - walking in a quiet line so other classes aren't disturbed

Parents will be notified if their child has consistent problems with any of the above areas. The action plan may involve a detailed report home daily which parents are expected to sign nightly and return the next day. Talk with your child's teacher during conferences to ensure continued communication about behavior choices. Information will also be shared on interim reports regarding your child's behavior during the day.

OFFICE REFERALS - resulting in suspension from school
Children will be referred to the office for:

Verbal and/or physical abuse to adults

Verbal and/or physical abuse to students

Misuse of property - stealing

Possession of weapon

A CHILL OUT room will serve as a temporary time out space if needed during the day. Teachers will work collaboratively to partner for needed "chill out" time for students. Parents will be notified if this option is necessary.

Bus Safety Rules

  • Be at your bus stop on time.  Drivers are NOT permitted to wait for students.
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding.  Then go directly to your assigned seat.
  • Remain seated while the bus is in route to school.
  • Speak in quiet voices.
  • Keep head, hands, and arms inside the bus at all times.
  • Throw trash in the trash can, not out the window.
  • Exit the bus in an orderly fashion.
  • Respect the bus driver and follow his/her specific safety rules and procedures.
Consequences
  • If students choose to disobey the safety rules, they will receive a written notice.  Administrators will talk with them to stress the importance of safety on the bus.  Parents will also be notified.  We would appreciate your help in talking with your child again.
  • The second write up will result in a 2 day suspension from riding the bus.  Parents will be notified.
  • A third write up will result in a 5 day suspension from the bus.  Parents will be notified. Students must participate in the Bus Safety Program conducted by a member of Cary Transportation.
  • If students continue to practice unsafe habits on the bus, they will be taken off the bus for up to 10 days.  Parents will be responsible for transporting their child to school during this bus suspension.  Please keep in mind this is NOT what we want to happen; however, safety is always a primary concern.
  • Students may be taken off the bus route for the remainder of the school year if their behavior continues to jeopardize the saftey of themselves and others.

School Cafeteria

Students are assigned a lunch number when they prepay for lunches and/or breakfast. Parents may send a check payable to Reedy Creek Cafeteria in weekly or monthly increments.

Students will be allowed to purchase only 1 snack item per day. Cafeteria prices are as follows:

Breakfast Prices
Full Price
$.80
Reduced Price
$.30
Lunch Prices:
Full Price
$1.75
Reduced Price
$.40

Students are allowed to go through the line once and should get everything they need then.

If a student runs out of money on their account, the WCPSS policy is that they receive unlimited fruits and vegetables for that meal. We make every effort to let students know when their lunch account is running out. We ask that parents also keep track of lunches purchased.

Conferences

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES will be held at least twice a year.  One of these is usually held around the 10th week of school.  The second conference can be held any time you or the teacher feels it is appropriate.   It is important that parents make every effort to attend.  COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL IS CRITICAL FOR A CHILD'S SUCCESS.  Parents should expect to see Language Arts, Writing, and Math matrices at every conference which will accurately document student growth on grade level objectives.

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES will be held for every child (K-5) three times a year.  These will be held at the end of second and fourth quarters as well as a goal setting conference during the first quarter.  Students will actually lead the conference using their portfolio as a guide to share accomplishments and set goals with parents for continued success.

**Parents are asked to call ahead to schedule conferences instead of just "dropping by."  This gives the teacher time to adequately prepare material to share with you.  This policy also protects the instructional time the teachers have with students.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Dismissal and Late Arrival Procedures

Dismissal - Students are dismissed from school in the following manner:

Bus - Students remain in their homeroom class until their bus color is called over the intercom.
Walkers - Walkers are dismissed at the 3:45 bell.
YMCA - Counselors from the YMCA meet children in the cafeteria at 3:45.

We ask that students arrive between 8:45-9:15 so that they are ready for instruction to begin immediately after the morning announcements every day at 9:15. Thank you for making sure the children are here on time and ready to learn!

Discipline Plan

School Rules - Respect yourself.  Respect others.  Respect Property.

The key components of the Reedy Creek Elementary discipline plan are as follows:

We believe all behavior is purposeful and that purpose is always an attempt to satisfy four basic needs of LOVE, POWER, FUN and FREEDOM.  If all these needs are being met children are hapy.  If one or more of these needs is not being met, we need to figure out which one it is.  We help children do this by using a problem solving process and asking students the following questions:

1.  What do you want?
2.  What are you doing to get what you want?
3.  Is it working?
4.  Can you figure out a better way?

We also believe we all make mistakes and children can take responsibility for them by choosing efective behaviors and creating positive solutions.  We teach children about restitution, "MAKING IT RIGHT."  We focus on helping the child restitute himself/herself back to the kind of person they want to be, and making a wrong right rather than focusing on negative consequences and punishments.  This process includes asking the student:
1.  What do we/you believe?
2.  What is your/our picture of the ideal classroom?
3.  What are the common values we agreed on as a class?
4.   What kind of a person do you want to be?
5.  What is your plan to make it right?

Students will use their CLASSROOM AGREEMENT as the starting point for these discussions.  Ownership of behavior is critical for all children.

Dress Code Policy

Principals shall exercise appropriate discretion in implementing this policy, including making reasonable accommodations on the basis of students' religious beliefs or medical conditions.

Students are expected to adhere to standards of dress and appearance that are compatible with an effective learning environment. Presenting a bodily appearance or wearing clothing which is disruptive, provocative, revealing, profane, vulgar, offensive or obscene, or which endangers the health and safety of the student or others is prohibited.

Examples of prohibited dress or appearance include, but are not limited to the following:

Health and Medication Policies
Immunization:  The law requires that every child be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, rubeola, rubella, hemphilus influenza, and mumps.  All students entering school must present proof of the following: The law also requires that a child enrolling in kindergarten present proof of a physical exam.  The kindergarten "Health Assessment" must be completed by the child's doctor and filed in the student's school records within the first month of school.  If this report is not on file by the 30th day, we are required to suspend the child from school until the health assessment is completed.

ILLNESS:  When children do not feel well, they do not do well in school.  Children who are running a fever should be kept home.  THEY SHOULD BE FEVER FREE 24 HOURS BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL.  Please be as prompt as possible if you are called to pick up your child during the day due to their illness.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Proof of Residency

If your child's residence is changed during the school year, you will need to provide proof of your new address to the school office staff. The Wake County Public School System accepts only the following documents:

Standards Based Grading

Student Performance Levels - The student performance level is determined with quarterly objectives and assessment data. Work habits and conduct grades are separate from the student's content proficiency.

Level 4 - Extends Targeted Grade Level Standards: represents the student exceeding grade level expectations set by the state and that a student will be successful in the next grade or quarter and whose curriculum may be enriched.

Level 3* - Demonstrates Proficiency of Targeted Grade Level Standards with Evidence of Application: represents the student meeting the grade level expectations set by the state with evidence of application and that a student has the necessary skills and concepts to be successful and confident in the next grade or quarter. Example: If a third-grader clearly understands the concepts of multiplication, can recall the facts quickly, and can use the multiplication to solve everyday problems. The teacher has collected evidence of this mastery and recorded it on the student's math profile. The student's assessment may indicate Level 3* work.

Level 3 - Demonstrates Proficiency of Targeted Grade Level Standard: represents the student meeting the grade level expectations set by the state and indicates that a student has the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next grade or quarter.

Level 2 - Inconsistent and Needs Support to Meet Targeted Grade Level Standards: indicates that the student has not yet met grade level expectations set by the state and that a student does not have the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next grade or quarter. This should alert parents that close communication is needed for further student support. If the student seldom turns in math homework and does not cooperate in group problem solving in math, this student's work habits and conduct grade may indicate Level 2.

Level 1 - Insufficient Performance of Targeted Grade Level Standards with Support: indicates that the student has not yet met grade level expectations set by the state and that a student does not have the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next grade or quarter. This should alert parents that close communication is needed for further student support.

Grades are provided twice a year for weekly special classes such as art and music, instead of quarterly. This provides special teachers the time with students they need to assess each student's work.

The new report card provides space for teachers to list the individual interventions such as a volunteer tutor, mentoring program, or Accelerated Learning Program instruction in which each student participates.

Reporting on Classroom Behavior - The new report card includes reports on the student's conduct and work habits in reporting on conduct, the teacher can indicate whether the student meets expectation in cooperation with others, respecting others, and observing rules and procedures. In reporting work habits, the teacher can indicate whether the student uses time wisely, listens carefully, completes assignments, writes legibly, works independently or seeks help when needed, and completes work.

The Rating Scale for Conduct and Work Habits - rates students with a 1 through 3, where students receive:
3 - Meets Expectations
2 - Inconsistently Meets Expectations
1 - Does Not Meet Expectations

Thank you for your cooperation.
